Toilet Won’t Flush

Common Plumbing Problems: Toilets Won’t Flush

There is nothing more frustrating than going to the bathroom only to find out that your toilet won’t flush. Not only can this be embarrassing, particularly if you have guests over, but it could potentially turn into a health problem as bacteria could build quickly. A toilet that won’t flush isn’t an emergency plumbing situation, but it’s a problem that needs fixing immediately nonetheless.

Why is your Toilet not Flushing?

Losing the ability to flush your toilet is a common plumbing problem. There are several reasons as to why this might happen.

  • Your toilet is clogged. This is the most common problem as to why a toilet is unable to flush. Using too much toilet paper or trying to flush down items that should be thrown in the waste bin instead could result in a clogged toilet. However, if there’s nothing visible in the toilet bowl that could be causing the water to not go down, then you could have a blockage in the pipe. An expert plumber is going to be able to safely and quickly find the blockage and remove it.
  • Your tank has little to no water in it. If there’s no water in either the bowl or in the cistern, it could be a good indication you have a clogged toilet. Furthermore, if you have a low water level in the cistern, you will be unable to flush the toilet successfully. In order to fix this, a plumber must come in, explore the toilet and piping, and find the cause of the low water level.
  • Parts in the cistern need replacing. Many times a damaged lift chain or warped flapper could cause a toilet to not flush. In this case, those parts either need fixing or just replaced with entirely new ones. This can be done yourself, but our plumbers are not only going to repair or replace the parts, but also look for possible damage and any other problems with your bathroom plumbing.
